"There is no alternative to the UN in terms of the development of international law and multilateral cooperation. And in a pandemic, the world needs the world organization more than ever as a moral leader."

This was stated by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov in his speech on September 25 during the General Debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, which is being held online because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The theme of this year's debate is: " The future we want, the United Nations we need: reaffirming our collective commitment to multilateralism – confronting COVID-19 through effective multilateral action”.

In front of the world leaders, Prime Minister Borissov stressed that as a member state of the European Union, Bulgaria will fight for a strong United Nations, considering it as its main partner and a solid foundation of the multilateral order based on rules. In this context, the Prime Minister pointed out that in 2020 Bulgaria celebrates 65 years since its accession to the United Nations. "As a member of the UN and the EU, the country is ready to take on its responsibilities. We actively support the leading role of the UN in multilateral cooperation to tackle the pandemic on a global scale," said Prime Minister Borissov.

In his speech, the Prime Minister stressed that the coronavirus has taken over the agenda of all institutions in the world and has turned people's lives upside down. One of the initiatives in which Bulgaria has joined as part of measures to support third countries to tackle the infection is the European Union’s “Team Europe” package. Along this line, Bulgaria redirected a little over one million euros of its funds for emergency humanitarian aid, health care and support for socio-economic development in the Western Balkans, the Eastern Partnership countries, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, Borissov said.

According to him, in order to recover from the negative consequences of the pandemic in the region of the Western Balkans, it is especially important to use effectively established mechanisms for cooperation such as the Berlin Process, co-chaired this year by Bulgaria together with the Republic of North Macedonia.

The focus of Prime Minister Borissov's speech in the General Debate was also the UN peacekeeping operations, which are a clear sign of international cooperation and solidarity.

"The global pandemic is also a threat to the timely implementation of the UN Agenda 2030. Bulgaria, together with other EU member states, is fully committed to the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals during the Decade of Action," said Prime Minister Borissov. "Getting out of the current crisis does not mean returning to the previous way of life, but it is necessary to step on a new paradigm through the implementation of long-term economic measures."Thus, the world will be prepared against future systemic shocks," Borissov said.

During the 75th session of the UN General Assembly on Monday, September 28, Bulgaria will join the "'Leaders' Pledge for Nature”, initiative. Its authors are countries from all continents. The commitment aims to show the political will of Heads of State and Government to protect biodiversity and to take specific action for change aimed at protecting nature, climate and people.

The initiative is in support of the forthcoming Biodiversity Summit on September 30, 2020, where Bulgaria will also be represented.
