The report of the European Commission for Bulgaria is objective and positive, said the Minister of Justice Desislava Ahladova on September 30. She said that our country will wait for the opinion of the Commission for Democracy through Law, known as the Venice Commission, on constitutional reform.

"The report is positive, objective, clearly outlining the results of cooperation with the EC in the context of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism and what has been achieved so far. Bulgaria will work on a draft of a new constitution after receiving the opinion of the Venice Commission. As regards the investigation of the Prosecutor General, it is currently being debated whether this independent prosecutor, who will investigate the Prosecutor General, has all the independence. That is why it is valuable for us for the Venice Commission to state its views,” said Justice Minister Desislava Ahladova.

According to Krum Zarkov of the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party, the report shows the complete degradation of the legislative process, the existence of corruption and the dependence of the media on the government.

"For Bulgaria, the rule of law report is a description of a country governed behind the scenes, corrupt, uncontrolled and in which the institutions that must ensure compliance with the law cannot or do not want to do so. The Commission's report is not a surprise to us. As I have said, we have repeatedly emphasised these issues - but it is high time we understood and the Commission decided to say that there was no indication that the current government and the ruling majority had the idea and the will to make changes in the right direction, " said Krum Zarkov, BSP.

According to the ruling GERB, the report confirms the irreversibility of the reforms in Bulgaria. The chairwoman of the GERB Parliamentary Group, Daniela Daritkova, pointed out that the government continues its commitment to guarantee the rule of law in Bulgaria as an EU member, the readiness of the country to actively participate in the dialogue on the rule of law.

"It is important that the objective report is read objectively by all political forces. This report is not for party use. It cannot be used to draw dividends or divert attention from an internal party problem. And in this case, I think we have witnessed this," said Daniela Daritkova.

The European Commission appreciates the government's efforts in the fight against corruption, the consolidated legislative framework and the activities of the specialized structures in the Executive and the Judiciary. This testifies to the determination of the Bulgarian institutions to deal with this global problem.
