The Prosecutor's Office in Bulgaria’s second largest city of Plovdiv initiated a check for the presence of plastic and other hazardous waste in the waters of the Maritza River. The deadline for finalizing the check is 20 days.
The investigation is into a crime under Art. 352 para. 1 of the Penal Code - pollution of the waters of Maritza River, which caused environmental damage. The inspection was assigned to the Basin Directorate - East Aegean Region and to the employees of the regional units of the Ministry of Interior in Stamboliyski.
At the order of the Prosecutor's Office, the inspecting authorities will require ducuments, explanations from managers of companies involved in the processing of plastic products and others.
Yesterday, experts from East Aegean River Basin Directorate said that there was pesticide-caused pollution of the Maritsa River and tones of fish was dead.
