Record amount of drugs seized at Danube Bridge near Rousse

Bulgarian customs officers on November 18 seized a record amount of drugs at the Danube Bridge near Rousse, Bulgaria’s border with Romania. This has been the largest drug seizure in the past 5 years. In a van with Bulgarian registration, they found 93 kg of heroin worth more than 3 million and 600 thousand BGN.

The 56-year-old driver was arrested for 72 hours. He travelled from Southern Bulgaria. The van was empty, but customs officers at the Danube Bridge noticed that its floor had been remodeled. During a thorough customs check, they discovered concealments that contained 184 packages of high-quality heroin. The product was destined for Western Europe and is likely part of an international drug trafficking ring. The driver was fully aware of what he was carrying.

The driver has already been charged. The supervising prosecutor Andrei Angelov said that the charges were for smuggling of high risk narcotic substance in extremely large amounts.

The law provides for 15 to 20 years of imprisonment and a fine to the amount of 300,000 BGN for drug trafficking.
