Residents from villages in the Northern Bulgarian district of Targovishte have to dig through 3 metres high snowdrifts to get to their homes. Volunteers provide bread and food for elderly people. For 20 days the residents of the villages have been in the grip of the winter weather. It was only in the recent days when roads were cleaned from the snow.
It has been snowing for days without stopping and the wind has drifted the snow and piled it on the roofs of the houses and farm buildings. Having to live with only 2 hours of water supply per day, people melt snow for their animals.
The risk of damages to the buildings prevents the entry of snow ploughing machines in the narrow streets, the local mayor says.
The residents of the villages say they have not seen such winter since 1984.
