The road between the north-west Bulgarian town of Montana and the town of Berkovitsa was closed for traffic on 14th of March because the water level of the river Burzia increased significantly after the heavy rains and washed away a temporary bridge between the villages of Borovtsi and Berkovitsa.
Traffic was diverted into the road via the town of Varshets. The diversion is 30 km long.
The washed out bridge was a temporary structure, which was built to secure crossing until the new bridge was put in place.
In the past 24 hours, the rainfall in the region of Montana reached between 13 and 29 lites per square metre. Since 9th of March, when the rains started, 90 litres pers square metre of rainfall have been reported for the mountain areas of the region and 60 litre per square metre for the plain areas, the Hydrometeorology Station in Montana said.
