Road repair work suspended to provide access to Rila monastery during upcoming church holidays

To facilitate the trips to Bulgaria’s Rila Monastery for the upcoming church holidays Assumption of Mary (August 15) and Assumption of St. John of Rila, the Wonderworker (August 18), when the Holy Monastery is visited by many pilgrims and tourists, the fortification activities of the landslide at the 27th km of the road III-107 Rila - Rila Monastery are temporarily stopped.

Road works will be stopped from Friday to Tuesday inclusive ( August 14-18).

The area of ​​the landslide is safe, signalled with road signs and temporary traffic lights. The traffic in a section of about 250 m is one lane, regulated by a traffic light and, if necessary, regulated by signalmen. Drivers are advised to drive carefully, follow the signs and observe the speed limit of 40 km/h.

The landslide repair work, which began at the end of June, is on schedule.

The technical project envisages the construction of a reinforcing concrete (pocket) wall with a length of 150 m and a height of 4.1 m, which will take the load of part of the landslide and be reinforced with micropiles and anchors. One third of the retaining wall is ready and anchored. Work continues on the construction of the rest of the facility with laying foundations and underlying concrete.

For strengthening, stabilization and erosion control of the slope, a geocomposite mat will be laid, covered with a high-strength steel mesh, the fastening of which will be carried out with steel anchors and mounting brackets. Hydroseeding will be applied and a protective drainage trench will be built.

The repair works envisage restoration of the road surface, as well as complete construction of the road structure in the destabilised section. New crash barriers and markings will be placed.
