“Today, Bulgarians said “no” to apathy and voted for change. We are yet to see the final result but ine is clear – people take democracy in their hands because it belongs to them,“ General Rumen Radev, an independent candidate backed by the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party said in the election night press conference at the National Palace of Culture on 6th of November.

He thanked the Bulgarian voters in the country and abroad for going to the polls, because it showed that the Bulgarian citizens were aware of their responsibility, he said.

“The hope of change is already tangible. People want to see more security and effectively working institutions; a higher standard of living and quality of life; a better-working economy, agriculture, small and medium sized businesses; strangling of corruption, cartels and monopolies; an effective judicial reform. To make all this happen, it takes lofty targets, which call for a vision, leadership and responsibility, and this requires an active independent President interacting with all institutions for the attainment of these targets," Radev remarked.

Radev’s running mate, the candidate for Vice President Ilyana Yotova thanked all voters who believed in hope and change in Bulgaria.

According to Elena Yoncheva, a member of the Initiative Committee which nominated the pair Radev - Yotova, noted that the campaign was fair and tolerant and thanked all committees, which are more than 100, for the support to the president/VP candidates. “We need a leader who is independent, who is free from various corporate and political interests, who will defend the national interest. We need to have a president who is strong, smart and thinking, “ she said.

"The change began tonight, and we trust it will be a fact at the end of next week," Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Kornelia Ninova said, referring to the runoff.
