The first secretary at the Russian Embassy in Sofia has been accused of espionage. The news was reported on October 28 by the press centre of Bulgaria’s Prosecutor’s Office.
Following a signal from Bulgaria’s State Agency for National Security (SANS), the Specialised Prosecutor's Office has initiated pre-trial proceedings for crimes against the republic.
It was identified that since September last year, the diplomat has held meetings, including with an official with access to classified information of Bulgaria, the EU and NATO.
Foreign Ministry officials told BNT that a meeting with the Russian ambassador was held and the diplomat had been recalled and had already left Bulgaria.
