The ballet "The Great Gatsby" based on the novel of the same name by American writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald will premiere on April 12 for the first time in Bulgaria, on the stage of the Sofia Opera and Ballet. Directed and choreographed by the world-famous Leo Mujić, whom Bulgarian audiences already know from the ballet "Anna Karenina", which was a huge success in Bulgaria.
The splendour and beauty of the 1920s, described so incredibly by Fitzgerald, come to life in Leo Mujić 's production in an extraordinary way. He chose the music himself, which includes compositions by George Gershwin, Samuel Barber, Benny Goodman, Leonard Bernstein, Philip Glass, Glenn Miller and George Whitefield Chadwick. Joy and sorrow, love and hate, intertwine simultaneously in this thrilling story about the glamorous world and lavish life of the American upper class.
The prima ballerina of the Sofia opera, Martha Petkova, who the audience will see in the title role of the beautiful and rich Daisy, does not hide her joy that this incredibly spectacular performance will be staged in Bulgaria. She says that all ballet dancers love working with Leo Mujić.
"This will be a unique event for me. Our national ballet is about to have an extraordinary premiere - beautiful, expensive, lavish, glamourous. A very dynamic performance. It will leave the audience breathless, very beautiful, very difficult for the artists, so we invite all the spectators because this is an event not to be missed."
Leo Mujić himself speaks about the challenge of turning the world's second most read novel as a basis for the ballet:
"There is nothing more powerful than ballet. There are simply words that cannot be spoken, but can be acted. We have phenomenal music, we have relationships between people, we have love. And tremendous work by everyone, both Marta and Federico Pinto," said Leo Mujić , the ballet choreographer.
Pinto will be seen in the role of Gatsby. Leo spared no praise for the other soloists and the entire ballet. After opening night on April 12, there will be six more performances on April 13, 14, 25, 26, 27, 28.
