Some hoteliers in Bulgaria’s Bansko ski resort have raised the rates of hotel services by nearly 30%. The Englishman James Hughes, who has been in the business for 15 years, has increased the room rates, but says he has lost part of his regular tourists - mostly Greeks and Russians. The hotelier is firm that the prices in Bansko resort are low for the services compared to the prices in the hotels abroad.

James Hughes owns a two-star hotel in Bansko. So far, his room rate per person per night, including with two breakfasts - morning and afternoon, was 15 euros and now is between 19 and 23 euros. He decided to increase prices after a tour in European resorts.

"I traveled all over Europe, for a room with no window in hotel in Parma in Italy, the rate was 120 Euro per night, in France the cheapest hotel I could find was 52 Euros. Our hotels in Bansko are unique, when we look at our 4 and 5 star hotels, they are wonderful, huge rooms with perfect spa centers, with good chefs and restaurants, and bars, and staff - and we give it to very low prices, that is suicidal,” he said.

James said that in other European ski resorts one cannot find a room for two for less than 200 euros per night. For February and March, his otel in Bansko is 80 percent booked by regular English tourists.

"23 euros per night per person with breakfast is nothing for a foreigner, that's nothing when you think a pack of cigarettes in the UK costs 10."

The Englishman also said he raised prices because of inflation. He lost poorer tourists who book over the Internet and mostly watch prices. According to him, hoteliers in Bansko, offering an all-inclusive price of 22 BGN per person, are compromising with food or hygiene.

Representatives of the tourist business in the resort said that most of thebookings in the hotels are at the old prices because they were agreed months ago through the tour operators. There is an increase in the prices in restaurants - between 5 and 10%.

James Hughes also hopes other hoteliers will adjust prices because his observations shows that owners who have been offering low-priced services over the past 10 years have already closed their hotels.
