Bulgaria's Strandzha honeydew honey is approved for registration by the European Commission as a protected designation of origin, Bulgaria’s EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, Mariya Gabriel, said on 1st of August at the opening of the World Honeydew Honey Symposium in the bulgarina Black Sea coastal town of Tsarevo.
The next step is to publish the product specification in the EU Official Journal in the autumn, and if there are no objections, the Strandzha honeydew honey will be listed in the register at the beginning of next year.
This registration is an opportunity to strengthen the development of local honey production, producers can get a better price for their product and be distinguished on the market. I am proud of Tsarevo beekeeper Manol Todorov and all the other beekeepers with whom we work together to make the unique product Strandzha honeydew honey become another emblem of Bulgaria, Mariya Gabriel said.
Gabriel welcomed the organisers of the World Honeydew Honey Symposium, presided by Manol Todorov, Tsarevo Municipality, Mayor Georgi Lapchev and the Golden Honey Foundation for the efforts made to organise the large-scale event, which after 10 years was again hosted by the town of Tsarevo.
The EU Commissioner also congratulated the Bulgarian beekeeping community, highlighting the good collaboration over the years.
