20th of June is the summer solstice of 2016 which marks the beginning of official summer season. For everyone in the Northern Hemisphere, it is the longest day of the year, known as the summer solstice (meaning 'sun standing still').
For the first time since 1967, the summer solstice coincides with a 'strawberry moon.'
Despite the name, the moon will not appear pink or dark red. It will be in warm amber colour.
A full moon in June is called the 'strawberry moon'. It received its name from Native American Algonquin tribes because it used to be an indicator for the beginning of the strawberry picking season.
In some parts of the “Northen Hemisphere this phenomenon is known as “rose moon”, “hot moon” or “honey moon” as it coincides with the most preferred month for weddings - June, while in the Southern Hemisphere it is known as “the long night moon”.
The next time the "strawberry moon" and the first day of summer coincide will be in 46 years, on 21st of June, 2062.
