The fifth vote of no confidence in Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov’s government, tabled by the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) on the grounds of failures against corruption, was rejected in Parliament on July 21.

All ministers from the cabinet were in the plenary hall. Prime Minister Borissov did not attend as he was in Brussels taking part in the European Council meeting.

A total of 237 MPs voted in the plenary hall. 102 voted in favour of the no confidence motion, 124 voted against and 11 abstained. The no confidence vote was supported by the opposition BSP and by the ethnic Turkish party “ Movement for Rights and Freedoms”. The motion was rejected with the votes of the governing coalition partners GERB and United Patriots. Businessman Mareshki’s party “Volya” abstained.

This was the fifth no confidence motion tabled by the opposition socialists since the current National Assembly took office in 2017. The government survived four previous votes of no confidence. They were on the issues of corruption, security, healthcare and environment.

Protests demanding the resignation of the government and of Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev entered their 13th day on July 21. This is the second day with anti-government protesters outside Parliament, starting from the morning.

A Coalition Council will be held after the vote of no confidence at which the governing parties will be deciding on possible reshuffles in the cabinet.
