The renovated central railway station in Bulgaria’s capital Sofia was officially re-opened on 26th of April. The modernized station is energy efficient, with solar panels, fire-proof ceiling and a new train dispatch centre.
Besides shops, cafes and playrooms for children, the station now has even a sports hall.
The railway station was first opened in 19th century and was one of the largest stations on the Balkans. It was illuminated by gas lanterns. It had heating.
This has been the first full-scale renovation since 1974. The project took almost 2 years and cost 61,5 million BGN.
One of the symbols of the old railway station – the locomotive – and some elements of the old mosaic were kept in place.
Light, warm and cozy with all these flowers – that is how passengers described it.
