Tonnes of waste were discovered in the riverbed of the Chaya River near the village of Katunitsa, Southern Bulgaria.
During an urgent joint inspection of the district administration, the Municipality of Sadovo, the Economic Police and the environment inspectors, it was found that there were dozens of huge bags of plastic clippings, rubber, metal and household waste on the site. Attached notes showed that the shipments were from Spain.
Atanas Ivanov, ecologist in Sadovo Municipality: We received a signal from a resident of Katunitsa village that there was a huge amount of waste in the riverbed of the Chaya River. We conducted a check identifying the current unregulated waste disposal that falls into the river bed and into state-owned property.
Mitko Stoychev, District Administration - Plovdiv: This qualifies as a crime. Perpetrator has not yet been found.
