Water prices are going up in 14 cities in Bulgria as of 1st of January, Energy and Water Regulatory Commission said on 15th of December. The biggest increase will be in Yambol (South Bulgaria) by 20%, in Vratsa (North Bulgaria) 13%, in Sofia by over 9%. In the morning, a protest organized by the BSP against the price hike blocked the traffic on Dondukov Blvd, outside the buildings of the Regulator and the Council of Ministers for an hour.
The protesters demanded the resignation of Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov because of his overall policy in the social sphere. GERB, the majority partner in the ruling coalition, accused the opposition of trying to influence an independent body elected by Parliament, such as the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission. The regional development minister said the government was preparing measures to compensate the most vulnerable social groups.
