The Military Police investigation into the Bulgarian Air Force MiG-29 aircraft crash on June 9 in which pilot Major Valentin Terziev died has been completed. The crash happened during a training exercise near Shabla on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast.

The Defence Ministry said that Aviation Accident Investigation Unit had formulated in its report three main theories about the causes that led to the aircraft crash, indicating one of them as the most probable.

The report said the commission classified the aviation incident as a "crash".

The immediate cause of the plane crash was "Aircraft encounter with the water surface".

The main reason is "Loss of orientation by the crew during night flights over the sea".

The accompanying reasons are:

1. Incorrect risk assessment by the combat control group and the firing command, from continuing the approach and attack targeting, given that the rate of fall of the SPM-100 target has increased. This inevitably leads to an increase in the dynamics of rapprochement and a possible deficit of altitude and time to safely exit the attack.

2. Features of flights over the sea at night, characterized by a lack of visual landmarks outside the cockpit and the need to pilot only instruments.

3. Improper distribution of attention before taking the maneuver to exit an attack.

The Minister of Defense is ready to submit the report prepared by the Military Police to the Prosecutor's Office, which is continuing the investigation under the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The records from the black box in a specialized laboratory of the manufacturer in Russia will be retrieved within 3-4 weeks.

The Chief of Defense has ordered an assessment of the degree of applicability of the regulatory documents concerning aviation activity in the Air Force given the existing limitations on air resources.

The necessary measures have been taken to prevent emergencies and the planned flight activity of the fighter aircraft is being resumed.

The report on the situation of the MiG-29 aircraft crash by the Aviation Accident Investigation Unit of the Military Police Service has been published on the website of the Ministry of Defense.
