Defence Minister Krasimir Karakachanov and Elzbieta Bienkowska, European Commissioner of Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) attended in Plovdiv an international conference on common European defence and security. The conference is a part of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of EU.
European Commissioner Bienkowska pointed out the significant progress in the use of European science funding. Some 500 million euro have been planned for defence until 2020 but larger sums are expected for the next programming period.

Elzbieta Bienkowska - European Commissioner of Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs:
We suggest a common budget of 13 bln euro for the European Defence Fund in the next programming period. Four billion euro have been offered for scientific defence research and almost 9 bln euro - for defence capacity.
The EC recommends that Bulgarian defence industry be ready to cooperate in research projects with their European colleagues.
