An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale was registered near the town of Provadia, Northern Bulgaria, about 2:00 pm on April 4, 2022. The epicentre was near the village of Zhitnitsa. No injured people and damages were reported.

The quake was felt on the higher floors of residential buildings in the region of Varna, Shoumen and Novi Pazar.

Most strongly, the earthquake was felt in Provadia and the villages around it. The plaster on the altar side of the church in the village of Manastir has cracked, which is actually the most serious damage.

People from Provadia Municipality and other neighbouring buildings were evacuated. No children from the kindergarten had to be evacuated. Mayor of Provadia, Zhoro Ilchev, told BNT that the quake was felt very strongly, but it was short.

The National Institute of Geodesy at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences said the earthquake was at a depth of 3 km.

According to Plamena Raykova, associate professor at the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography, earthquakes are observed in the region because Provadia is located in the seismogenic zone Shabla, which is characterized by historical seismicity.

In the past 20 years, approximately 30 earthquakes with magnitudes above 3 on the Richter scale have been recorded in this region. For a more serious earthquake with a higher magnitude, or roughly the one we recorded today, is the earthquake in 2009, with a magnitude of 5, which was again felt by people in the area, but there were no casualties, no injuries and no damage.
