Another group of illegal migrants detained near Sofia

Another group of illegal migrants was detained in Bulgaria.

Around noon on October 14, 2021, the police received a signal for a group of men spotted in the area of Trakia Motorway near Sofia. According to the reported information, the migrants got out of a car and hid near the crash barrier.

Police teams were immediately dispatched to the scene and found 7 men without identity documents, claiming they were from Syria. On arrival of the police, the driver abandoned the car on the road and fled. He was detained after a short pursuit by officers of the Specialized Police Forces of Sofia district police.

After establishing his identity – a 21 year old from Sofia, he was detained in police custody. The migrants were taken to the police station, from where they will be transferred to the centre for temporary accommodation of foreigners in Busmantsi.

This is the third case of detained illegal migrants in Bulgaria in the past 24 hours.

More than 20 illegal migrants were found during the night on the Sofia-Bourgas sub-Balkan road at the junction for the town of Maglizh, where they are believed to have been abandoned. The quick reaction of the law enforcement agencies prevented a serious traffic accident, as it was raining in the area and visibility was reduced. The driver of a car with Romanian registration is being questioned by the police as an accomplice.

Last night, a lorry crashed on the road between the villages of Yasna Polyana and Veselie in Bourgas district, South-Eastern Bulgaria. 34 illegal migrants were found in the lorry, 8 of whom were slightly injured in the accident. The driver was detained by the police. He was tested for drugs, which showed that he had used amphetamine. Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated.
