On 5th of July, Sofia City Court sentenced Volen Siderov, the leader of the nationalist Ataka party, to 2 years of probation following the five separate sentences issued by the court, for which he signed plea bargains with the Prosecutor’s office. He was also sentenced to deductions of 25% from his monthly MP salary. In the next 2 years, twice a week, Siderov will have to meet a probation officer.
Siderov was sentenced for hooliganism and inflicting minor bodily harm to a police officer during the incident at Varna airport, when he got involved in a confrontation with a French diplomat in 2014. He also pleaded guilty for the intrusion in the Academy of Film and Theatre Arts in Sofia, on 23rd of October 2015, as well as for the late-night incident at an alcohol and tobacco shop in Rakovski street in Sofia on 5th of October 2015, the incident of assault of a TV reporter in front of the Parliament in 2013 and the disruption of a solemn commemoration of the Batak massacre in 2011.
After the sitting of the court, Siderov sarcastically commented that the European Commission could be now calm that the judiciary system in Bulgaria works well as he was the first politician to receive a sentence.
The ruling of the court can be appealed within 7 days.
