The Bachkovo Monastery, located on the right bank of the Chepelare River, 189 km south from Sofia, will welcome the “Dormition of the Mother of God” with restored frescoes of “Virgin Mary” church. The repair in the courtyard of the temple continues. The government has allocated BGN 310,000 for it.
The renovation of the frescoes began two years ago when a businessman from Plovdiv donated half a million leva for the restoration of the unique images. The dome under the altar and the temple's pulpit are entirely restored.
For years, the foundations of the church have been drenched with moisture, so the bottom of the walls has not been restored. Specialists will be consulted about the problem.
Although the monastery's courtyard is undergoing a thorough renovation, the flow of worshippers does not cease, but thousands are expected to come for the feast.
Traditionally, the celebration, dedicated to Virgin Mary, begins with vespers on 14th of August. Hundreds of worshippers remain throughout the night in the holy cloister to take part in the early church service.
The rooms for pilgrims in the holy cloister are already booked for 15th of August. You can still find vacant rooms in the nearby guest houses.
