The Third Transport Mobility package was on the agenda of the EP Transportation Committee which had to vote on its social texts Monday. The committee decided not to vote on the package as a whole but postpone the final voting for the next year. As to the controversial points compromise conditions were agreed.

international truck drivers threaten exit referendum updated

Previously proposed amendments by the road transport mobility package referred to conditions such as the drivers’ return to their home countries every 3 weeks, the ban on spending nights in their truck cabin instead of staying at a hotel and the introducing of tahometer to monitor drivers’ rests. West European countries insisted on these changes not just to ensure good working conditions for drivers but to avoid dumping and fragmentation on the internal market as well.

Ardent critics of the EC proposals, Bulgarian international truck drivers considered those proposals indirect danger of loosing their work. On Monday they threatened to initiate a referendum on the country’s exit from the EU if Brussels would not give up intended restrictions on them, imminent by the reforms on European transport legislation.

Results of the discussion in Brussels came Monday evening to calm down the truck drivers' community in Bulgaria.Yet one of their trade union leaders said that it was a small victory and the war was to come.
