On 1st of June, the municipal council in Bulgaria’s Black sea coastal city of Bourgas adopted a ban on wearing burqa in public places. 34 councilors voted in favour of the proposal, 7 abstained and one councilor voted against.
The municipal council in Bourgas has two councilors from the “Movement for rights and Freedoms”. One of them, Sherafet Mehmed, said during the discussions that she was against the ban. She added that many residents in the municipality followed traditional Islam, but she had not seen anyone wearing burqa.
