“We in GERB have never governed out of spite,” wrote GERB leader Boyko Borissov in a post on Facebook. He had met with party members and supporters in Silistra on December 12.
“In GERB, we have never governed out of spite! Especially in a situation of major public tension, such as the one we saw in the square. This is what I stated today at a meeting with party members and supporters in Silistra.
For us, power is not an end in itself, which is why we realised that our participation in government had lost its meaning.
The government was formed in order to put an end to a series of seven elections that cost Bulgaria BGN 1 billion, money that we are now trying to find to increase incomes. We used this important political moment to move towards joining the eurozone and to implement the Recovery and Resilience Plan. Because we know that in a country with extreme political instability, investors do not come.
Once again, GERB demonstrated statesmanlike behaviour, choosing to be a bridge rather than a brake, in the name of giving our children a future. We are submitting resignation also because a war can only be ended by someone who is capable of achieving peace,” he wrote in the post.
