Kornelia Ninova and MPs from the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) discussed the draft anti-corruption law prepared by BSP with representatives of the Union of Judges on 24th of August.
The Bulgarian justice system needs a new body to fight high-level corruption, because the existing structures have so far failed to achieve the desired outcome, was the general opinion.
According to the judges, the idea for this body to have investigative functions and its chairperson to be appointed by the President, does not contradict the Constitution.
The Union of Judges proposes to more clearly describe the nomination and appointment procedure of the Chair of the structure in order to ensure maximum transparency of the choice. They also recommend better accountability. BSP leader Kornelia Ninova said that the BSP will comply with the recommendations made.
Earlier in August, BЅP said it had drafted an anti-corruption law of its own and would start consultations with judges, prosecutors, lawyers and academic community.
