Bulgaria’s caretaker Defense Minister: The black box of the crashed MIG-29 fighter jet will be read in Russia

The black box of MiG-29 aircraft that crashed into the Black Sea will be read in Russia, Bulgaria’s caretaker Minister of Defense, Georgi Panayotov, said in Karlovo on June 30.

The Ministry of Defense has received a response from the Russian aircraft company MIG, which said that it prefers the data from the black box of the aircraft, taken out of the sea to be read by them - on the territory of the Russian Federation.

This means that the black box with a group of most likely three people from the Military Prosecutor's Office, the Military Police and the Air Force will travel to Russia as soon as possible and we will wait for a result from there, said the Minister of Defense.

The flying activity of the fighter aircraft has been suspended for the time being, but according to the Chief of Defense, Admiral Emil Eftimov, it can be resumed within 2-3 weeks.

June 30 was a day of mourning dedicated to pilot, Major Valntine Terziev, who died in the crash. He was laid to rest with military honours and 4 gun salutes in his birthplace, the town of Assenovgrad (Southern Bulgaria).

Hundreds of servicemen from all air bases came to pay respects. His wife Dimitrina Popova expressed her love with a bouquet of red roses. After the burial ceremony, their son received the national flag folded into a triangle.

Earlier, President Rumen Radev, caretaker Minister of Defense Georgi Panayotov and Chief of Defense Admiral Emil Eftimov paid their final respects to Valentin Terziev at Graf Ignatievo Air Base.

By order of the Minister of Defense, Valentin Terziev was posthumously promoted to the rank of "lieutenant colonel".

The black box of the MIG-29 aircraft that crashed into the Black Sea near Shabla during training exercise on June 9 was recovered, but technical issues prevented the data being extracted from it.. Caretaker Defense Minister said on June 25 that Bulgaria will seek help from the manufacturer from Russia to read the data from the black box.

The box is depressurized, was filled with water and has a broken ribbon cable, which makes reading the data at this stage risky and almost impossible, explained Defense Minister Georgi Panayotov.
