“The stability of the banking sector is of a great importance for us in order to prevent a situation like the one in 2014, which badly affected the loyal depositors and took a lot of public resources,” Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said on 10th of June during a meeting with the Governor of the central bank of Greece, Yannis Stournaras.

Borissov added that one of the first tasks of the government, after he took office as Prime Minister, was to take measures, jointly with the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB), to enhance banking supervision and maintain financial stability in the country. “This process of increased control will continue”, he noted.

Borissov said that according to the assessments made by BNB, the Bulgarian banking system is stable, including the banks with participation of foreign capital. He expressed hope that the ongoing stress tests in the credit institutions would confirm the stability and the results would lead to increased confidence in the banking sector in the country.

PM Borissov welcomed the traditionally good cooperation between the two central banks and especially their interaction in the most difficult moments of the Greek crisis in the recent years, government’s press office announced.

The meeting was also attended by Bulgaria’s Minister of Finance Vladislav Goranov and the BNB Governor Dimitar Radev.

The Governor of the central bank of Greece, Yannis Stournaras, is on a visit to Bulgaria at the invitation of the governor of Bulgaria's central bank, Dimitar Radev.
