Bulgaria’s Prosecutor General, Ivan Geshev, discussed the challenges facing investigative authorities in the era of digitalization with representatives of the International Association of Prosecutors at a conference in Istanbul, Republic of Turkey.
The forum was organised by the Prosecutor General of Turkey, Bekir Sahin, and the topic of the meeting was "Investigating Crimes in the Digital Age".
The first Pan-European Regional Conference brought together chief prosecutors, representatives of prosecutorial and investigative authorities and heads of crime fighting organisations from Europe, Central Asia and the United States.
The Bulgarian delegation also included Tsvetomir Yosifov, Head of the International Department at the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor's Office, and the District Prosecutor of the city of Sofia. Vladimir Nikolov, President of the Association of Prosecutors in Bulgaria.
Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev stressed the important role of digitalisation in facilitating investigative authorities worldwide in the performance of their duties, but pointed out that the increasingly fast-developing new technologies open up a new segment in crime.
For this reason, investigators and prosecutors need to be extremely resourceful in order to improve the means they use to detect and investigate new crimes at the same pace of upgrading technological capabilities.
"New possibilities - robotisation, digital evolution, modern ways of gathering information are the new conditions against which we must work to protect the rights of our citizens and the stability of our legal systems," Ivan Geshev said.
Within the framework of its visit to the Republic of Turkey, the Bulgarian delegation held bilateral meetings with the representatives of the investigative authorities of the countries participating in the forum.
