Free screenings in “Odeon”cinema and a premiere in “Lumierre” cinema will mark the start of the celebration of Bulgaria’s National Cinema Day on 13th of January. The slogan of this year’s edition is “Sofia in Cinema and Cinema in Sofia”. The organizer is Bulgaria’s National Film Centre (NFC) in cooperation with Sofia Municipality, Bulgarian National Film Archive, the National Palace of Culture and the Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers.

Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture and “Lumierre” Cinema theatre will become first screen of Bulgarian films, as agreed in the Memorandum for cooperation between the National Palace of Culture and National Film Centre, which will be signed on 13th of January.

The free screenings of Bulgarian films in “Odeon” Cinematheque Theatre begin with Petar Vassilev’s “Master of all Trade” (1962).

Seven documentary films are dedicated to Sofia. “Our Capital” (1958) directed by Boris Milev and Alexander Rupchin, tells a story about the past and the present of the city, its beautiful sights and landmarks. “ In Rakovski street” (1970 – director: Konstantina Gulyashka; script writer : Georgi mishev and Georgi Drumev)n takes the viewers to five theatres, the house-museum of Ivan Vazov, Peyo Yavorov and other monuments of Bulgarian history, buildings and memorial tablets of distinguished predecessors.

Examples of architectural heritage after the Liberation of Bulgaria - towers, bay windows, architectural sculptures, buildings from that epoch and streets that affiliate Sofia to the closest European capitals are featured in the documentary “Sofia in Foreshortening” (1978) directed by Dimitar Kitanov.

The Cinematheque Theatre "Odeon" will also host the premiere of the first four titles of the portmanteau film Five Minutes Sofia, produced by actor and singer Kamen Vodenicharov and Mihail Landzhev.

The main premiere of the day will be Yavor Veselinov’s "Sofia 100 Years Capital of the Bulgarian Cinema", produced by Gala Film.

On the 13th of January 1915, theatre director and leading actor, Vassil Gendov, presented to the public the first Bulgarian feature comedy "Balgaran is Gallant". On 27th of December 2005, Bulgaria’s Council of Ministers declared 13th of January for professional holiday of the filmmakers and as the Day of Bulgarian cinema.
