On 9th of May, Bulgaria marks the Day of Europe – a holiday that celebrates peace and unity on the old continent.
The day is marked on the date, on which 66 years ago, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation and a united Europe.
At a solemn ceremony held in front of the building of the Presidency in Sofia, the flag of Europe was hoisted while the national anthem of Bulgaria and the anthem of Europe were played.
Bulgaria’s President and Commander-in-chief of the Bulgarian armed forces, Rosen Plevneliev, greeted the guard unit.
The ceremony was attended by Bulgaria’s Vice President, Margarita Popova; the Chairperson of Bulgaria’s Parliament, Tsetska Tsatcheva; Sofia’s Mayor, Yordanka Fanadakova and the Head of EC Representation in Bulgaria, Ognian Zlatev.
