Smuggling of currency to the equivalent of BGN 537,923 was discovered by the Bulgarian customs officers from Bourgas Customs territorial directorate.
On October 24, 2021, at Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, around 10 pm, a bus with Romanian registration arrived at the border crossing, on its way to Turkey. The driver was Y.K., a 29-year-old Turkish citizen. The bus was travelling on the route from Bucharest, Romania, to Istanbul, Turkey, through Bulgaria.
Customs officers inspected the vehicle, during which undeclared money to the amount of 75,000 euros and 168,770 British pounds were found, with a total Bulgarian equivalent of about 537,923 BGN. The currency was hidden in a lid placed on the floor, through which the cabin was connected to the engine compartment.
Fast-track proceedings were opened by an investigating customs inspector from Bourgas Customs Territorial directorate for a crime under Art. 251 of the Criminal Code.
The driver Y.K. was detained for a period of 24 hours under the Customs Act. The investigation is currently underway under the supervision of the District Prosecutor's Office in Haskovo, Territorial Department - Svilengrad.
