The Speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament, Tsveta Karayancheva, invited the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, to a parliamentary meeting on the Western Balkans in September in Sofia. The two spoke at the European Parliament in Brussels on 20th of February, and then jointly opened a conference on stability, economic coordination and governance in the European Union.
The forum discussed the strengthening of the economic and monetary union and the future multiannual financial framework after the UK leaves EU. According to Tajani, national parliaments and the EP must play a key role in the debate on European finances and the future of the EU. Karayancheva stressed that cohesion policy is very important for reducing social disparities in the EU.
“Subsidiarity is key to both the European and national parliaments. It is very important for us to work with national parliaments on a permanent basis. I am very pleased with the cooperation with the Bulgarian Parliament over the next 6 months. If we want to reduce the gap between European citizens and the institutions, we should work together, taking into account the citizens. This is our duty, and that is why we need to strengthen this cooperation in the months ahead of the European elections in 2019, " EP President Antonio Tajani said.
“How will Brexit affect the financing of the individual policies and the relative contribution to the new multi-annual financial framework of each of the 27 Member States? One of the main priorities of the EU and of the Bulgarian Presidency is the reduction of social differences within the Member States as well. In this sense, I call for Cohesion Policy to remain in the European budget beyond 2020, “ Karayancheva said.
