bulgarian borissov cancelled meeting macedonian president

The meeting of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva with Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov, scheduled for Thursday morning, 15th of June, is cancelled, government’s press office said on 14th of June.

"We don't want to interfere in the foreign affairs of our neighbouring country Macedonia. Our position on the solution of Macedonia-Greece naming dispute is principled and clear, as is the position of the entire international community. The position of the President of the Republic of Macedonia is also clear. The Bulgarian government sees no point in being used in the internal political debates of Skopje. Integration into the EU and NATO is of key importance to the future development of our neighbour Macedonia and it must not be put to question," the government press office said.

The announcement comes a day after a scandal between Macedonian President, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov. In an address to the nation following their meeting, which lasted only 2 minutes, Macedonian president Gjorge Ivanov said he would not support the agreement with Greece on the name of Macedonia and called it damaging. According to Ivanov, everything that is holy for Macedonia was disregarded, and the EU and NATO cannot be an alibi for the bad deal.
