Bulgarian police officers saved 111 migrants from drowning in the Maritsa river on 13th of January. At this stage, it is not established whether they are from Iraqi or Syrian origin, the deputy chief secretary of Bulgaria’s Ministry of Interior, Georgi Arabadzhiev, said during a briefing.
Sixty one of the rescued migrants are children, twenty six are women and 24 are men, the MoI press office said.
A police officer from the border police office in Novo Selo, South Bulgaria, noticed a large group of people trying to get to the bank of the Maritsa river. Others were found in the bushes.
All migrants were without ID documents and claimed to be Syrian citizens.
