Caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Yanev held a meeting with the Ambassador of Slovenia to Bulgaria Anžej Frangeš on July 6. The talks focused on bilateral relations and topics on the European agenda in the context of the priorities of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU, which began on 1 July.

The objectives of the presidency towards the sustainability and reconstruction of the European Union, the organization and holding of major events within the Conference on the Future of Europe, the rule of law and other topics were presented and discussed.

With regard to the EU enlargement process, the topic of the European horizon for the Republic of North Macedonia and the relevant challenges was discussed. Stefan Yanev reaffirmed Bulgaria's position and Bulgaria's principled support for the European perspective of the Republic of North Macedonia and Albania, highlighting the need for a more effective dialogue and real will to resolve the contradictions between our country and Republic of North Macedonia

Emphasis was placed on the requirement to fulfill the commitments in the bilateral agreement and to take real action with regard to the protection of human rights and the cessation of hate speech. The feeling was expressed that our European partners are rather taking sides, tolerating Republic of North Macedonia, respectively - blaming Bulgaria, without real and well-founded reasons.

The Bulgarian caretaker Prime Minister noted that in his capacity he tries to act as a politician and not as a bureaucrat and in this sense the main priority is to represent and protect to the maximum extent the national interest of the Republic of Bulgaria.

Emphasis was placed on the EU as a reliable and secure union capable of ensuring security and stability in the neighbourhood. In this context, the key role of transatlantic cooperation and the development prospects of the Western Balkans were highlighted.

Special attention was paid to the need for a full-fledged debate in the forthcoming public debate on the Recovery and Resilience Plan, as well as to the role of parliament as a key factor in ensuring broad support and legitimacy in terms of its parametres.

The role and importance of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Bulgaria was also discussed during the meeting. Caretaker Prime Minister pointed out that every effort was being made to ensure the fairness and authenticity of the vote and the opportunity for Bulgarian voters to vote freely in accordance with their preferences.

At the end of the conversation, the Bulgarian caretaker Prime Minister wished every success to the Slovenian Presidency and stressed that he insisted on an open and honest dialogue and that he relied on reciprocity in this regard.
