On 25th of January, Bulgaria’s Supreme Cassation Court acquitted the former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov in the so called “6 Noes trial”. thus, Tsvetanov has been acquitted of all charges.
This was the latest trial against him. He was accused in crime against justice because of 6 refusals to allow the use of special surveillance devices (SSD) to eavesdrop Orlin Todorov, the former head of s regional unit for combatting organised crime in the town of Veliko Turnovo, although the use of SSD had already been allowed by court.
From the motives of the court it becomes clear that according to the magistrates Tsvetanov had breached the law as he declined to allow the use of SSD, but the Prosecutor’s office was unable to prove that it was done for the purpose of thwarting prosecution against the former anti-mafia head and two other people.
Tsvetanov was found guilty at two previous court instances. Sofia City Court sentenced Tsvetanov to years of imprisonment, while Sofia Court of Appeals upheld the sentence. The Supreme Cassation Court returned the case on the grounds that Tsvetanov’s right of justice from an unbiased court was violated. Later, the appellate court acquitted him and this verdict comes into force.
Previously, Tsvetanov was acquitted in two other trials - one based on charges of embezzlement and the other one for allowing unlawful eavesdropping.
