Bulgaria’s Parliament accepted the resignation of the head of anti-corruption commission

Bulgaria’s Parliament on February 2 accepted the resignation of the head of the anti-corruption commission, Sotir Tsatsarov. "We Continue the Change" party (from the ruling coalition) described the resignation as belated and said they would work to reform the anti-corruption commission.

Opposition GERB believes that voting for this resignation is the first thing the majority will do without analyzing the situation.

In the absence of Sotir Tsatsarov in Parliament, lawmakers accepted his resignation as head of the anti-corruption commission. GERB expected him to come.

"When it comes to something important - you hid our proposal under the carpet, now Tsatsarov under the carpet, the carpet will appear to be small," Toma Bikov of GERB said.

"There is Such a People" party explained that according to a decision of the Constitutional Court, the Parliament must vote for the resignation without a hearing.

"In the anti-corruption law passed by GERB - if MPs wanted to debate, they could ask for and initiate such hearings," Iva Miteva said.

"We Continue the Change" assessed the work of the commission with comparison.

“This commission has done more than the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in 100 years. Everyone who was subject to its checks came out with a halo over their heads after its inspections. I believe that the next anti-corruption commission will be more effective," said Konstantin Bachiiski.

The BSP described the termination of Sotir Tsatsarov's term in office as heralded.

"Under the fanfare of a mega super body for failing to deal with high-level corruption, he gathered incompatible mechanisms under one hat. Tsatsarov found a haven under this law. This resignation is a heralded act," said Krum Zarkov, MP from BSP.

The ruling party recalled the motto with which they won the election.

We hope that Chief Prosecutor Geshev will follow the example and we will discuss another resignation ", said the chairman of the PG of “We Continue the Change”, Andrey Gyurov.

Desislava Atanasova, the chair of GERB's PG, answered him:

Yes, in the last year and a half, 3 names have been the main slogan - Borissov, Geshev and Tsatsarov. Borissov has won confidence three times in elections. Tsatsarov resigned - his decision was made before Petkov spoke about your people who will be appointed somewhere. Resignations by Chief Prosecutors are not discussed here in Parliament. This rule guarantees a separation of powers."

According to Hamid Hamid from the MRF PG, "the agenda is for a group of oligarchs, organized crime group, who will now have a rest because everyone's accounts have been frozen."

The ruling has called for effective reform of the anti-corruption commission.

"I hope it does not turn out that half of the National Assembly will be subject to inspection by the anti-corruption commission," commented Iskren Arabadzhiev of “We Continue the Change”.

In the end, the resignation was accepted by an absolute majority.
