caretaker minister justice seeks dismissal chief prosecutor

Caretaker Minister of Justice, Yanaki Stoilov, on July 16, submitted a request to the Supreme Judicial Council for a procedure for termination of the powers of the Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev. The proposal will be considered on July 22.

The caretaker Minister told media that two days ago he received information from the caretaker Minister of Interior, Boyko Rashkov, about violations committed by the Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev. The violations are described in a 100-page report.

"After reviewing the information provided, I believe that there is evidence of actions and inactions of the Chief Prosecutor, which constitute a serious violation of official duties and actions that undermine the prestige of the judiciary," said caretaker Justice Minister Yanaki Stoilov.

Ivan Geshev took office on December 18, 2019, and his term is 7 years. Only the SJC can remove him from office. Such a procedure in the SJC requires 17 votes. A little over a year and a half have passed since the start of the term in office of the Chief Prosecutor.

Shortly after he took office, high-profile operations took place and a declaration of war on household crimes. The Prosecutor's office filed charges against former environment minister Neno Dimov.

A series of charges against gambling businessman Vasil Bozhkov followed.

Geshev assigned the State Agency for National Security (SANS) to conduct a revision of the entire privatization process.

One of the high-profile actions of the Prosecutor's office was on July 9 last year, when searches were conducted in the Presidency, and two advisers to the head of state President Rumen Radev, were arrested.
