Investigators from the national investigation on April 14 pressed charges against the mayor of the coastal city of Varna, Ivan Portnih, for the incident with the damaged sewer pipe under Varna lake.
According to the prosecutors, as mayor of Varna, Portnih did not warn people in time about the pollution, thus creating a danger to the health and life of the population.
The pre-trial proceedings are being monitored by the Varna District Prosecutor's Office. The investigation is also focused on poor quality repair of the facility, which resulted in an accident that contaminated the lake and the canal.
