Chief Health Inspector to seek extension of protective measures beyond June 30

Given the current new peak of the coronavirus, efforts are focused on monitoring the implementation of existing protective measures. The control will be tightened, but the introduction of new restrictions is not envisaged, Assoc. Prof. Angel Kunchev, Bulgaria’s Chief State Health Inspector told BNT current affairs show “More from the Day” on June 23.

He said that currently 320 people diagnosed with Covid-19 are in hospitals and added that 20% of the infected need hospital treatment, 4-5% are in serious condition and are in intensive care. The coronavirus cases are in clusters. The specialists are making efforts to limit the existing outbreaks. Recently, there are separate cases in other parts of the country. This, according to Kunchev means a transition to diffusive infection.

The expert said he would not link the reaching of a certain number of infected with a possible return of the measure to stay at home.

"It's a matter of expert judgment, including what the cases are. If the virulence of the virus drops, which at the moment is not happening, then it would be possible for people to go through it with milder symptoms,” he said.

Assoc. Prof. Kunchev stated that the situation in the German slaughterhouse, with an outbreak of infection in the recent days, is being closely monitored. Bulgarian workers work there, some of whom have returned to the country. Therefore, there is a possibility of importing the infection.

Angel Kunchev called on people to listen to those in responsible positions. He stressed that finding a balance between caring for public health and protecting the economy is very difficult and this is the main task of professionals involved in the organization of the fight against the virus.
