Bulgaria’s Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) gave a special briefing on 26th of February because of the heavy winter conditions on the roads across the country. The purpose of the meeting was to analyse the situation in the whole country together with the Traffic Police teams.
After the RIA briefing, it became clear that the winter situation all over the country is getting complicated, BNT reporter Tihomir Ignatov said. Most difficult is the situation in Northeastern Bulgaria, and more precisely in the area around Dobrudzha, as well as in the Rila-Rhodope region. In some places, the snow cover exceeds 30 cm, and wind gusts are over 15 m / s.
Eng. Doncho Atanassov, Member of the Management Board of RIA said that there are no closed roads for all motor vehicles in Northeastern Bulgaria. Only the old road from Varna to Aksakovo is closed. The road from Ruse, Veliko Tarnovo, through the Hainboaz Pass, in the direction to Svilengrad is closed for heavy vehicles. Traffic for heavy vehicles is limited in the region of Lovech in both directions. There are no limitation on the motorways. RIA advises motorists to avoid travelling unless it is absolutely necessary or urgent. The winter conditions are expected to further complicate in the next 3-4 days.
