Coronavirus in Bulgaria: Total confirmed cases is 1594, frontline doctor dies

The total coronavirus cases confirmed in Bulgaria on May 2 is 1594 after 6 more people tested positive for the virus since this morning, the national task force said in its afternoon update on May 2.

The new cases are registered in Sliven, 3 people; in Stara Zagora, one; in Yambol, one, and in Sofia, one.

321 people diagnosed with covid-19 are in hospitals, 40 of them being in intensive care.

The total includes 795 men and 799 women.

The number of medical professionals who tested positive for the virus is now 174, with the largest number being in Pirogov emergency hospital in Sofia – 48 doctors and medical workers. So far, none of them has had severe symptoms.

As at 17.00 pm, on May 2, the cases of coronavirus in the districts across the country are as follows: Blagoevgrad – 50; Bourgas – 47; Varna - 26; Veliko Turnovo – 24; Vidin – 125; Vratsa – 9; Gabrovo – 6; Dobrich – 13; Kardzhali – 13; Kyustendil – 69; Lovech – 2; Montana – 18; Pazardzhik – 27; Pernik – 19; Pleven – 157;Plovdiv – 76; Razgrad -1; Rousse - 15; Silistra - 5; Sliven – 52; Smolyan – 36; Sofia – 729; Stara Zagora – 38; Haskovo – 17; Shumen – 4; Yambol – 16.

The fatalities are 72. This includes Dr Iliana Ivanova, a doctor in the infectious diseases ward of a hospital in Sliven, who died at the age of 43 after two days in intensive care. Her husband, a doctor who works in the same ward, was in quarantine.

The three other deaths were those of a 68-year-old man in Blagoevgrad, who had heart and respiratory failure; an 80-year-old man with heart disease who died at the regional hospital in Vidin; and an 82-year-old woman from Pleven. She had underlying conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart disease.
