At a meeting of the Council of Bulgarian Presidents on 25th of January, Bulgaria’s President Rossen Plevneliev and the former Presidents Petar Stoyanov (in office from 1997 to 2002) and Georgi Parvanov (in office from 2002 to 2012) called for expanding the role of direct democracy.
The Council of Bulgarian Presidents, which was established in 2013 at the initiative of Rossen Plevneliev, met for fourth consecutive year.
This year’s participants, Stoyanov, Parvanov and the current President Plevneliev, described the referendum held on 25th of October as a success for the Bulgarian civil society.
The three expressed hope that 2016 would be the year in which the judicial reform would be implemented and considered that the state should focus efforts to overcome social inequality and integrate marginalized groups in the society.
The presidents strongly condemned any form of terrorism and were adamant that a common European approach was necessary to deal with the consequences of the migration pressure and the resulting refugee crisis in Europe.
A quarter of a century after the beginning of the democratic changes and the establishment of the Bulgarian presidential institution, Stoyanov, Parvanov and Plevneliev decided to initiate the creation of Presidential Library, in which people would have direct access to information about the work of the presidents during their terms of office.
