Тhe so-called ”Bridge of Friendship” was officially opened on 21st of June in 1954. Today, the border crossing is one of the busiest in Bulgaria.
If back then the passing cars were dozens, today they are thousands. Nearly 1,500 lorries and about 1,600 cars cross the border in twenty-four hours. Traffic is even more intense in the summer. At the moment, the Danube Bridge is under repair works, so the service counters of the Border Police are four - two for cargo lorries and two for cars. After completion of the repair, a total of 12 lanes will be available for all vehicles.
During the summer season, Border police units will be on duty on both sides of the bridge - on the territory of Giurgiu, Romania and Rousse, Bulgaria. This joint activity is an 8-year tradition that proves the good cooperation and excellent results achieved.
Today's traffic is calm. The queues include 10, maximum 15 vehicles, for cars, buses and lorries. The repair works continues.
