The Deputy Mayor of Lovech (Central Northern Bulgaria) Tsvetan Georgiev was attacked and beaten in the morning on 10th of May outside the block of flats where he lives in Zdravets residential district of the city. The incident was about 7.00 am when he was going to work. His legs were broken as a result of the beating. There are wounds on the face as well.
Currently, Georgiev is in a hospital in Pleven.
The Mayor of Lovech municipality, Kornelia Marinova, believes the attack is probably because of alerts submitted by the Deputy Mayor to the Prosecutor's Office about illegal logging. The attacker is being searched.
This is not just an intimidation. For me, this is literally a murder attempt. I do not know what the law enforcement agencies think, but we have several alerts sent to the prosecutor’s office about offences in the logging sector. There have been direct and indirect verbal threats against the Deputy Mayor by people from this sector and for me the probability of the attack coming from there is at least 90%, she said.
