Eggs, withdrawn from market due to bird flu, pose no risk for consumers’ health

Bulgarian eggs will be withdrawn from the market because of a bird flu outbreak in a poultry farm in the village of Donchevo, Dobrich area.

Consumption of eggs and poultry meat is not harmful to human health but will be withdrawn from the market in order to limit the spreading of the flu.

The eggs to be pulled from the shelves are numbered 2BG08001 and 3BG08001.

The avian influenza strain is not dangerous to people's health and does not cause illness – neither from meat consumption and from eggs, Dr. Rayna Ivanova from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency said on 20^th of June. Eggs are withdrawn from the market in order to limit the disease.

The eggs are distributed all over the country, but the shops and the warehouses are identified, Dr. Ivanova said. Immediately after the authorities established the outbreak of the bird flu, a protection zone was set up.

Preventive measures have been taken throughout the country, Dr. Ivanova pointed out.

Regular clinical examinations of the birds are carried out. Farm оwners are required to perform laboratory tests on the birds.

Infected birds from the farm will be culled in a humane manner in order to prevent spreading the disease. Some 1.1 million eggs have been withdrawn.
