Fines to be imposed on retailers failing to provide space for Bulgarian products

In an extraordinary sitting on April 14, Bulgaria’s Parliament voted on sanctions for supermarket chains if they do not offer Bulgarian products on specifically allocated spaces in their premises during the coronavirus state of emergency. The MPs also conclusively adopted amendments to the Energy Act.

The topic of protection of the Bulgarian producers became one of the main debates in the plenary hall during today's extraordinary sitting. The MPs decided that the big retail chains would be fined from 15 to 25 000 BGN if they did not set up separate stalls for Bulgarian goods. In the case of repeated violation, the fine will be from 30 to 50 000 BGN.

The coronavirus state of emergency measures were discussed this morning at a council between the ruling GERB and the United Patriots (minority partner in the ruling coalition government). Such coalition council that will discuss the situation in the country will be also held after Easter.

The MPs also adopted changes in the energy act, which are related to the reimbursement of overpayments by Bulgargaz after the drop in the price of natural gas.

The Bulgarian government on April 13 issued a decree requiring the large supermarket chains of stores to offer Bulgarian products made by local producers. The aim was to reduce the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic on food producers in the country.

The decree also requires that sufficient space should be allocated at the premises of the retailers and the products should be displayed in a manner that clearly indicates that the products were made locally.
