Torrential rains have caused serious damage to the area of Elena Balkan, near Bulgaria’s old capital Veliko Turnovo. On Monday night, Vesselina River, which runs through the village of Drenta, overflew and the flood water swept away two wooden bridges. Now, there is no access to several houses.
One of the residents is the 71-year-old Ivan Krastev.
He says that this is the first time he has seen such a disaster, which took away the bridge.
The flash flooding carried away the car of Milko Lisichkov and it was found a kilometer and a half away from his house. Milko says he was awoken by thunders and the strong noise of the overflowing river. When he got up he saw his garden was full of water, reaching a level of a metre and a half.
The downpours have also triggered landslides in several places in the area.
The residents say they were worried because the next torrential rain may cause even more serious damages.
